Minoxidil 5% Review

In 1988, after FDA approval, the Upjohn Corporation introduced Rogaine as a topical hair loss treatment containing the active ingredient minoxidil.  The company previously used the ingredient in a pill form to treat high blood pressure.  When those who took the high blood pressure medication noticed increased hair growth, it was found that the effect of increased blood flow helped hair follicles regrow new hair.

Rogaine is the name brand solution of the Upjohn Corp. product sold all over the county, but generic versions have been developed and are purchased over the counter as well.  The formula containing 5% is recommended for men only.  Women who suffer thinning hair may use a lesser dose of minoxidil, up to 2%.

Since minoxidil 5% is used to treat genetic hair loss, the treatment must be continued indefinitely.  If the treatment is ever ceased, the natural genetic loss of hair will continue its course.

Benefits of Minoxidil 5%

Minoxidil is a vasodilator and helps promote blood flow.  When minoxidil 5% is applied to areas of thinning hair, the follicles experience an increased blood flow.  The root of the hair within the follicle may begin regrowing hair thanks to the nutrients from the increased blood flow.

Minoxidil 5% is very effective for men with thinning hair on top of the scalp or a receding hairline.  Regular application is twice daily.  About 51% of men notice hair regrowth on the scalp on along the frontla hairline.

Method of Treatment

5% Minoxidil is a topical treatment in foam or liquid form.  A dose is applied twice daily and is recommended to remain unwashed for at least 4 hours.  After the dose has dried, men may generally use other hair products for styling.  It is usually recommended to try the drug for about six months to determine the effectiveness.

Costs of Minoxidil 5%

Minoxidil 5% is purchased over the counter.  Name brand Rogaine is more expensive, but cheaper generic brands can be purchased for about $20 or less.

Side Effects
